7 Reasons You are Losing Hair
According to professionals, losing a certain amount of hair every day is par for the course. “There is a range, and that range is anywhere from 50 to 100 hairs a day,” Cartersville, Georgia, trichologist Yvonne Solomon says. What is considered excessive? Whatever seems excessive to your normal standards is a good reason to get yourself checked out. If you are starting to notice your drain clogging up too often, there may be a reason behind it.
“When someone [comes in] with excessive hair loss, trichologists try to figure out when it started,” Solomon says. “We go back three months to see what significant events have taken place, because that’s how long it takes [the hair cycle to be disrupted].”
While everyone’s body is different, and getting checked out by a professional is always recommended, here are some common reasons you might be starting to shed.
Diet
Diet is the biggie. “Like with any cellular activity in your body, proper nutrition is necessary,” Solomon says. “Our diet today is sorely lacking in nutrients."
Iron, zinc, Vitamin D, omega-3s, and protein are all required nutrients for healthy hair.
Weight Loss
Rapid or extreme changes in your weight will cause a shock to your system, with hair being the first casualty. “Hair is always the first thing to react, so it’s important to pay attention to it,” Solomon says.
Change in Medication
A new medication might causes a shift in the body, Solomon says. “Certain medications will deplete certain nutrients in the body and cause hair fallout.” She says you don’t need to stop taking that medication, but to consult a trichologist about supplements you can take to amend the depletion.

7 Ridiculously Easy Hairstyle Ideas for Wearing Your Hair Down
It's quick, insanely stylish right about now, and adds the perfect It Girl element to any formal outfit. It's also a great way to disguise unmanageable locks, but spend too much time with your hair up and you might be setting yourself up for a lifetime of bad hair days. Wearing the same updo over and over can stress out your hair, leading to hair breakage, and — since the hairstyle is constantly tugging at the follicles — even hair loss. Here's how to wear your hair down even when you really don't want to.
Discover dry shampoo
This should be a no-brainer by now, but if you don’t have dry shampoo all over your bathroom mirror by now, I just don’t understand you. Dry shampoo (or plain corn starch, like I use #bohemian) means your hair will never look greasy again. No joke. If you don’t have time to hop in the shower, rub dry shampoo into your roots and finish off with salt spray instead of disguising dirty roots with a ponytail.
Get an easy curling iron
Sometimes your hair is just wavy in all the wrong places. Don’t reach for that scrunchie — get a curling iron that’s really easy to use. I just bought this clamp-less ceramic curing iron and it’s changing my life: it’s so much quicker and more intuitive than the clunky curling irons of yore. Watch these tutorials by The Glamourai or Cupcakes and Cashmere to learn how to wield your curling iron for quick, easy waves. Hint: as with all hairstyles, it’s easier to curl dirty hair.

17 Genius Ways to Make Thin Hair Look Seriously Thick
First off, there are a few things you need to avoid.
1. Pinterest is going to tell you to use coconut oil. Don’t do it if you have thin hair.
“Oil just adds shine, it won’t actually make anything better,” Lily Yip, master stylist at Mizu Salon, tells BuzzFeed Life. “Silicones and oils just become a coating on top of hair, so it’s very difficult to remove. Eventually, it weighs down your hair and you get tons of buildup and it actually makes your hair look thinner.”
2. Steer clear of shampoos with ammonium lauryl sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate.
“People with thin hair need to avoid detergents, polymers, proteins, damaging alcohols, and ammonia that is found in traditional shampoos in the form of ammonium lauryl sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate. These ingredients are added to make the shampoo feel thicker and richer in your hand, and also to create the foaming lather people have come to expect,” Chaz Dean, creator of WEN Hair Care, tells BuzzFeed Life. “The reality is that these same ingredients are incredibly harsh and drying to your hair and scalp.”

What You Should Be Doing Right After Your Shower
There are some routines in our lives that have become so, well, routine that we go through them as if on autopilot: brushing our teeth, washing our face, shaving, etc. Our post-showering rituals would probably fall into this category, as most of us consider getting dry and clothed as the basic priorities after showertime. While we understand this thought process, we feel it is our duty to inform of you of how crucial your post-shower routine is in maintaining the health of your hair and skin. Take a look at the following non-negotiables you should be implementing into your post-shower ritual.
1. Moisturizing
Hot water and steam can do a number on your skin, leaving it super dry after showering. Do your due diligence in keeping it supple and hydrated by moisturizing from head to toe. This is a great time to put that new body butter to good use!
Product Recommendations: Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream-Intense Hydration, The Body Shop Almond Body Butter
2. Patting (Not Rubbing) Your Skin Dry
We totally understand the need to dry off fast and hop into some warm, clean clothes, but that rough towel-drying you’re engaging in isn’t doing much for your skin. Rough rubbing can exacerbate dry, sensitive skin even more. Instead, try a more gentle approach, patting your body with your towel. We promise it won’t take up more time, and your skin will thank you!
3. Throw on Your Serums
After a steamy shower, the pores in your body are open, allowing for better absorption of skincare products and solutions. This is the perfect time to give your mug love by throwing on your skin-saving serums and oils.
Product Recommendations: SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age Defense, L’Oréal Paris Youth Code Dark Spot Correcting & Illuminating Serum Corrector
4. Apply Leave-In Conditioner or Detangler
Are you haphazardly throwing your unbrushed, wet hair into a tangled bun after you hop out of the tub? This could be contributing to those split ends and breakage you’ve been spotting. Take a few minutes and spritz your post-shower hair with a nourishing leave-in conditioner or detangler and comb through it (don’t brush!) with a wide-toothed comb. This step is especially important for those with dry, frizzy locks.

5 Questions to Ask Your Stylist Before Your Haircut
Editor Note: Despite being seasoned beauty veterans, even the best of us can be at a loss for words when sitting in our stylist’s chair. Unfortunately, not communicating the right things can not only lead to a poor experience, but (horror!) a bad haircut. To ensure that we never have a cutting mishap again, we asked Warren Tricomi stylist Zachary Rej Morad to give us the essential questions you should always ask.
Getting your hair cut can be a very intimidating situation; 9 times out of 10 when someone sits in my chair for the first time she usually opens with a story about an awful past experience. To avoid any confusion (or disappointment) after the cut, it’s important to ask these questions beforehand to create an understandable dialogue for both you and your stylist.
1. Where will my style fall? When talking about the length of your hair, you want to ask where the perimeter will fall once it’s dry and styled. As your stylist, if we discuss taking two inches off of the length, it may seem like more once I have styled it.
2. Will I have to style it every day? A lot of times, someone will come in and want a look that may actually take a lot of time to style depending on the individual’s hair. It's important to ask this question because many prefer a "wash and wear" cut that makes their morning routines easier. You should always choose a haircut that works best for your lifestyle.
3. Will I be able to pull it back? One common mistake is deciding to cut your hair so short that you aren't able to pull it back into a ponytail. When discussing a new cut with your stylist you should always mention if you want to be able to pull it back because that instantly rules out a lot of super short styles and leaves little room for miscommunication.
4. What will the maintenance be like? The fact is: some haircuts require more upkeep then others, so when you’re in the chair you want to ask how often you are going to have to return. I have some clients that are only able to come in every few months. As their stylist it's important that I create a look for them that’s going to support itself for that amount of time.
5. Should I wait? When trying something new or switching stylists it’s best to be patient. In some situations, it's necessary to give your hair time to grow before changing the cut, thus giving your stylist a clean slate. Ask your stylist if the look you want is achievable with what you already have or if you should let it grow for a little while first.

How Long Does It Take to Grow Out Natural Hair?
Timetable
Shoulder length:In general, assuming that you are starting from a fresh, bald shave it should take you about 2 to 2 ½ years to reach shoulder length with great hair care.
Armpit Length: Between shoulder length and brastrap length lies another popular hair length in the hair forum world known as “armpit length” (APL). This is the length along the back that is defined by the imaginary line drawn across the back where the arm meets the back (armpit) and then travels across to the other side. From shoulder length, APL could be anywhere from 6-15 months away- obviously depending on individual trim rates and retention.
Brastrap Length: About 9 months to 18 months from there, you can expect to be reaching brastrap length (BSL). I’ve seen it done in both. This is the length along the back where the bottom strap of your bra rests.* This length is typically 3 years out from a clean shave.
Midback/Waist: From a clean shave, it will take you about 3-4+ years of healthy hair care to reach midback length (between brastrap and waistlength), and possibly another six months to a year to reach waist length considering the length of your torso/back and any trims you may do along the way.

12 Fashion & Beauty Tips from Disney Princesses
As a little girl (and even as a not-so-little-girl), I was obsessed with everything princess-related. My favorite books were The Princess and the Goblin, A Little Princess, and The Princess in the Tower, and I loved any fairytale or any film that had anything to do with the regal beauties. I daydreamed my youth away pretending that I was a princess from a magical land far, far away, and not unlike most of the girls I knew growing up, I was completely obsessed with Disney. I loved and admired every single Disney princess for her own sense of strength, courage, love, and of course, beauty. I spent my days secretly wishing to be like them — to dress like them, have hair like them, live where they lived and have adventures like they had.
Then came that dreaded time where youth turns into adolescence, and my love for Disney (although staying very much alive), took a backseat to the more urgent, pressing matters of a girl becoming a teenager. My daydreams of being a Disney Princess would have to wait, for my time was suddenly devoured by worry and stress over how to style my actual hair, how to dress and pick out my actual clothes, and how to live and be happy in my actual life. No one prepares you for these changes. One day you are daydreaming away about a beautiful and fantastical life, then the next you are faced with the cold-hard reality that life isn't as whimsical or fantastical as you'd dreamed. It's cold, cruel and sometimes terrifying.

3 DIY Winter Hair Treatments for Naturally Curly Hair
With rainy days just around the corner, us curly beauts are certainly starting to fret about the cold weather and wild temperaments that autumn brings. Already my tresses are in desperate need for a curl-defining styling agent that will keep my curl pattern lookin' tight! During my relaxed days, I didn't have to worry about frizz at all; my hair was chemically straightened and the oil my scalp produced was enough to keep shine in even the coldest winter. During my shorter, natural style my hair loved a fresh drink of rain water, so I had zero concerns running to the store sans raincoat or umbrella. Now that my tresses are getting longer and thicker? I need something to hold my curls all day long.
Of course, coming from a generation of hairsprays and heavy gels, I'd dreaded even starting to do the usual trial and error of finding an OTC styling agent I like. Fortunately for those who insist on an all-natural beauty regimen, hair butters, soufflés, and gels are plentiful. I've used SheaMoisture's curling gel soufflé which my curls loved, the stickiness was at a minimum and it was heavy enough to keep my curls in check — as the day wore on however, I noticed some serious product build-up and spent most of the day picking little bits of product out of my tresses. I delved into Jane Carter's curl defining cream and my scalp AND hair were looking all types of sexy, but the solution is so light that sadly, that big tub doesn't last me long. For about $18, I need something that's going to hold my hair and my wallet over.

6 Tips You Need Before Considering a Long Bob
I recently came to a miserable conclusion I’ve been fighting for years: I just can’t pull off long hair.
I’ve tried, and tried, but Blake Lively-worthy lengths are just not in my future — and never were. Why? I’ve got the finest hair ever. Like, physically unable to put in a top-knot, oils up in an hour, falls out in the fistful hair. You know how hairstylists tell you the best styles are always achieved with second-day hair because it gives more grip than squeaky clean hair? Well, I don’t have second-day hair, because it’s an oil-slick mess. I have three-hour hair.
After accepting that long, voluminous, textured styles aren't in my stars, I took the plunge and booked a cut to get the short look of the moment: the "lob," or long bob.
It’s been life-changing. My hair feels and looks healthier, and I’ve been styling it up in so many more interesting ways than I ever could before.
Thinking about joining me? Here’s what you need to know before taking to the scissors.

6 Tips for Preventing & Fixing Split Ends
You might be wondering what exactly a split end is anyway, besides a life-sucking force that sabotages any effort you put into your hair. Split ends occur when the outer layer of hair (the cuticle) has been damaged enough to expose the inner layer. This inner layer is highly susceptible to further damage and dehydration, which in turn leads to splitting. Split ends appear dry and frizzy, detracting from the overall appearance of your hair's health. They can also easily break off, making your hair appear shorter. So how do you fix split ends?
Here's the bad news: Split ends cannot actually be repaired. That's right, once the split has occurred, the ends cannot be fused back together. That means those split-end sealing products? Those won't reverse the damage or breakage your hair has already suffered. Although they might be able to keep the split from moving farther up the shaft of your hair, unfortunately, the only true way to eliminate a split end is to cut it off.
But even though you can't truly fix split ends without cutting them off, there are things you can do to make sure they don't get any worse between trims. And please, whatever you do, DO NOT play with your split ends like they're Wishbones.

5 Best Ways to Brush Your Hair Based on Hair Type
Brushing your hair… seems pretty simple, right? Not so fast. According to those in the know (expert hairstylists who see us brushing our hair the wrong way... oh, every single day), the best way to soften up your strands isn’t going from top to bottom: it’s the exact opposite.
Adam Maclay, a hairstylist at NYC’s Patrick Melville Salon, sees too many of us ripping through our hair. He suggests a far gentler method: “Always brush your hair from the ends back upwards to your scalp,” he says. “Start at your tips in small sections, then work up to the mid shaft, and then finish at the roots.”
Here are the tools and techniques to help you brush your hair the right way for your hair type:
Fine Hair
The one thing that experts agree on with regard to fine hair is that brushing is the major cause of breakage. “Fine hair has up to 50 percent less internal protein than thick hair and an average diameter of roughly 70 microns compared to the 90 micron average normal hair diameter,” says NYC hairstylist Jonathon Mason. So every time you yank your brush through your fine strands, it’s causing way more damage than it would with other hair types.

8 Tips for Styling a Long BoB
If you run a Pinterest search for the long bob (or "lob" as we've all come to affectionately call it), you've likely seen dozens of similar photos of perfectly tousled, impossibly textured beachy waves against a stark white background. If you've given in to this particular celeb hair trend, you're likely wondering how to style a lob so that it looks as good as all those pins. Well, a lot of these perfect Pinterest lobs come courtesy of Anh Co Tran, an L.A.-based stylist who has actually trademarked the catchphrase "Lived-In Hair™." At his Ramirez-Tran Salon, which he owns in partnership with equally swoon-worthy colorist to the stars Johnny Ramirez, Tran sculpts perfectly messy lobs and styles them to Instagram perfection.
If you're like me and don't live anywhere near L.A., you're likely thinking that your geographic location is standing in the way of you and the lob of your dreams. Thanks to the wonders of the Internet, however, that's not the case. I recently took the plunge into the world of the long bob, and I also spent more time than I'd care to admit watching Tran's incredible tutorial videos for how to achieve Lived-In Hair™. Since his exact techniques are a bit too time consuming for my usual morning routine, here is my bare bones approach to creating a Pinterest-worthy lob.

6 Worst Things to do to Straight Hair
Straight hair can be a blessing and a curse. Yes, you’ve been genetically handed the type of hair 95 percent of girls covet, but according to NYC hairstylist Adam Maclay, “Straight hair tends to break easier than a curly or medium texture hair type.” The key to managing it, he says, is to always be gentle. And avoid all of the following mistakes:
Putting Your Hair In A Ponytail While Wet
“Hair has 50 percent less elasticity when wet, so imagine your hair like a rubber band,” Maclay says. “If you stretch it and then let it dry while pulled tight… damage is going to inevitably occur.” Let your hair dry naturally and freely.
Brushing Your Hair While Wet
Same theory, same outcome. Running a heavy brush through your wet strands stretches them, resulting in breakage and frizzy ends. “Gently brush from ends to roots, working your way up in small sections to avoid over pulling your hair.”

How to Wake up with Pretty Curls ( even if you have straight hair )
The '80s had their perms. The '90s had their butterfly clips. The '00s had their chunky highlights. Today, it's all about a head full of loose and easy curls. Every star from Gisele Bündchen to the Housewives of New Jersey has sported this decade's iconic look, but the seemingly-effortless waves tend to actually take a great deal of effort and even worse — a great deal of time. Plus, if your hair is as flat and straight as mine, the dreamy waves can seem 100 percent impossible, especially after hours of curling and re-curling, trying to make the ever-elusive curls stay put. However, what if I told you that you could get the look without having to wake up early, without having to sit in your bathroom for hours, and without having to redo twenty minutes after your hair falls limp? Ah, I have your attention now. Yes, there is a way to make straight hair curly overnight.
Working in broadcast news, I have to get up as early as 3:00 am to report to work. Since my eyes can barely open when my alarms ring in the morning, the last thing I can deal with is having to figure out what to do with my hair. Instead of having to set aside 20 to 30 minutes at the crack of dawn to manage my bedhead, I have developed some serious creativity when it comes to getting my locks in tip-top shape for the world of television. I discovered that I — and all those like me who wake up at ungodly hours to go to work, to feed a baby, to catch a plane, to sneak out of a lover's apartment — have more time than we think to get the hair of our dreams while we dream.

The Bobby Pin Trick that Changes Everything
Are you sitting down? If not, we recommend you find somewhere to do so before reading any further – we’re about to drop a bombshell. You know your trusty bobby pins? Those little things you use to hold all your intricate ‘dos in place? Well, you’re using them wrong. We’ll give you a moment to collect yourself. If you feel like you did when you first found out you could curl your hair with a straightener, we feel you. This is one of those nuggets of information that might just change your beauty routine forever. Intrigued? Shocked? Annoyed at us for not sharing the trick already? Keep reading…
Give ‘em Grip
This trick is a game-changer for fine-haired ladies: spray your bobby pins with hairspray. That’s right – your go-to styling product is a match made in heaven with these little pins. Coating your bobby pins with a layer of hairspray will transform them into “sticky pins” and give them a better grip when you slide them into that carefully styled bouffant braid. If you don’t want to spray them individually, you can place your bobby pins on a paper towel, spray, then pick up the paper towel on the edges and give them a little shake to distribute the product evenly. Then, just pin away!
Get Flipped
We weren’t sure we were ready for our worlds to be turned upside down either – but now that we’ve seen the light, there’s no going back. You know the ridged side of bobby pins? That part should actually face towards your scalp. The wavy texture allows it to grip your hair better and prevent it from sliding out. By flipping your bobby pins, the smooth side will also blend in better with your hair — perfect when creating a chic chignon or any other sleek style. We know, we know…Mind. Blown. Still skeptical? Give it a whirl — we guarantee you’ll notice a difference!

7 Tips for Avoiding Hair Breakage
Natural hair has long been compared to a garden: The drier your garden is the more likely all the nutrition will get zapped up and die. Watering your hair daily is a must that I, like most kinky girls, begrudgingly adhere to. Keeping your garden all natural, sans chemicals, is a great way to up the nutritional value and keep the healthy organisms that grow naturally — the same thing can be said for my 'fro. Diligently keeping up with the a simple, natural hair routine should keep my locks growing to its full potential of health and beauty.
It came as a surprise to me then, when I noticed some serious — ok not so serious, but alarming nonetheless breakage around the edges of my scalp. As someone fairly obsessed with my hair, I peered at the sections and recoiled in fear. What was I doing to deserve any kind of breakage? Had I done something bad in a past life to warrant these split ends? Was this my hair's passive-aggressive way of telling me that it was going to break off whether I liked it or not, or is there a key element of hair maintenance that I'm ignoring? A thinning hairline is just not something I was going to stand for.

Dry Hair? 5 Hot Oil Hair Treatments
This summer gave me a case of serious dry hair. I hated every minute of it. After having my hair in a crown braid for most of the winter, my 'fro longed to come out and play, but that air conditioning and that humidity rained all over my hair parade. At some point in July, I gave up blow-outs and elaborate dry hairstyles that would either shrink up or become coarse and brittle by the time I hit the subway platform. Instead, I started applying water to my hair daily and used hot oil treatments a few nights a week.
Those daily doses of water turned my 'fro into fine, oiled machine. I'm not talking about casual spritzes either; these were complete soak fests that helped me spring back from some seriously dry times this summer. Now that the humid nights have taken a backseat for crisp, fall weather? I am in desperate need to restore some serious moisture that mother nature rudely stole away this summer. One of the healthiest and most luxurious ways to do this is with a hearty, hot oil treatment made from ingredients mother nature herself can provide. These treatments are amazing for your hair regardless of the density of your mane, just adjust the frequency depending on your thickness.
