How to Get Better Posture Experts'Simple Tips
Your mother may have always told you to “sit up straight” for good reason; poor posture not only signals a lack of confidence, but can also be bad for your health. When you’re not sitting or standing up straight, your muscles and ligaments must struggle to align and keep your body upright. This naturally leads to back pain, but can also cause tension headaches, neck pain, muscle strain and joint pain. Luckily, these ills can be remedied with just a little behavior change.
Standing Properly
To avoid looking like someone out of the early stages of human evolution, abide by these six tips for good standing posture:
1. Stand relaxed (do not lock your knees), but keep your shoulders back.
2. Tighten your core so that your abdomen is pulled in, but not to the point that you’re straining.
3. Keep your butt tucked under your hips so that your pelvis stays aligned.
4. Feet should be forward and aligned directly below each of your hips with your weight evenly distributed between feet.
5. Arms and hands should be loosely at your sides in a natural stance.
6. Lift your chin slightly so that your head is straight.
None of these motions should be too harsh or tight; you should feel relaxed, but aligned. If it helps, imagine a string going from the top of your head down your body all the way to the ground between your feet.
If you’re having to stand for a while, physical therapist Michelle Davidson recommends standing with your feet a little further apart than usual with one foot more in front of the other. By doing this she says you will be taking some of the strain off your back, which will help prevent tension and pain in the area.
If you’re unsure if you’re hitting the posture-perfect marks, test it out. Back up against a wall until your hand, shoulder blades and butt touch the wall. Your feet should remain a few inches apart, again, under your hips. Next, reach your hand against the wall behind the curve of your lower back, the lumbar curve. There should be just enough space for your hand to fit; if there’s more, focus on tightening your core. If there’s not enough space, your back should be arched comfortably to achieve proper alignment.
Sitting Properly
Learning to sit properly is crucial to obtaining and maintaining good posture. First, you should select a chair that will allow you to have both feet firmly on the floor with your knees in line with your hips. You should sit with your shoulders back but relaxed and against the back of the chair, making sure your lower back meets with the back of the chair. You should lift your chin lightly so that your head is level with your neck in a relaxed, straight position.
Again, imagining a string going from the tip of your head down your neck, your upper back and lower back can help achieve this torso alignment. You may feel ridged or stiff at first, but eventually your body and muscles will get used to sitting properly and it will become natural for you.

7 Reasons You are Losing Hair
According to professionals, losing a certain amount of hair every day is par for the course. “There is a range, and that range is anywhere from 50 to 100 hairs a day,” Cartersville, Georgia, trichologist Yvonne Solomon says. What is considered excessive? Whatever seems excessive to your normal standards is a good reason to get yourself checked out. If you are starting to notice your drain clogging up too often, there may be a reason behind it.
“When someone [comes in] with excessive hair loss, trichologists try to figure out when it started,” Solomon says. “We go back three months to see what significant events have taken place, because that’s how long it takes [the hair cycle to be disrupted].”
While everyone’s body is different, and getting checked out by a professional is always recommended, here are some common reasons you might be starting to shed.
Diet
Diet is the biggie. “Like with any cellular activity in your body, proper nutrition is necessary,” Solomon says. “Our diet today is sorely lacking in nutrients."
Iron, zinc, Vitamin D, omega-3s, and protein are all required nutrients for healthy hair.
Weight Loss
Rapid or extreme changes in your weight will cause a shock to your system, with hair being the first casualty. “Hair is always the first thing to react, so it’s important to pay attention to it,” Solomon says.
Change in Medication
A new medication might causes a shift in the body, Solomon says. “Certain medications will deplete certain nutrients in the body and cause hair fallout.” She says you don’t need to stop taking that medication, but to consult a trichologist about supplements you can take to amend the depletion.

7 Ridiculously Easy Hairstyle Ideas for Wearing Your Hair Down
It's quick, insanely stylish right about now, and adds the perfect It Girl element to any formal outfit. It's also a great way to disguise unmanageable locks, but spend too much time with your hair up and you might be setting yourself up for a lifetime of bad hair days. Wearing the same updo over and over can stress out your hair, leading to hair breakage, and — since the hairstyle is constantly tugging at the follicles — even hair loss. Here's how to wear your hair down even when you really don't want to.
Discover dry shampoo
This should be a no-brainer by now, but if you don’t have dry shampoo all over your bathroom mirror by now, I just don’t understand you. Dry shampoo (or plain corn starch, like I use #bohemian) means your hair will never look greasy again. No joke. If you don’t have time to hop in the shower, rub dry shampoo into your roots and finish off with salt spray instead of disguising dirty roots with a ponytail.
Get an easy curling iron
Sometimes your hair is just wavy in all the wrong places. Don’t reach for that scrunchie — get a curling iron that’s really easy to use. I just bought this clamp-less ceramic curing iron and it’s changing my life: it’s so much quicker and more intuitive than the clunky curling irons of yore. Watch these tutorials by The Glamourai or Cupcakes and Cashmere to learn how to wield your curling iron for quick, easy waves. Hint: as with all hairstyles, it’s easier to curl dirty hair.

7 Biggest Myths About Bras
Good news for pretty much anyone with boobs: A new study focusing on bras and breast health, published Friday in the medical journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, showed that there is no link between wearing a bra and developing breast cancer. Researchers at Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center conducted a study — the first of its kind — looking for proof of the oft-rumored correlation between bras and breast cancer. After surveying over 1,500 postmenopausal women about their bra-related history and habits, as well as their breast cancer status, the research revealed that there was no connection between wearing a bra and developing cancer.
"Our study found no evidence that wearing a bra increases a woman's risk for breast cancer," noted researcher Lu Chen. "The risk was similar no matter how many hours per day women wore a bra, whether they wore a bra with an underwire, or at what age they first began wearing a bra."
The news is quite a relief for all us underwire warriors, since the myth that bras cause cancer has had a longer lifespan than even those email chains your kookiest aunt is always sending you. The idea of a bra-cancer connection was even the subject of the highly controversial 1995 book Dressed to Kill (which, notably, was written by medical anthropologists, not research scientists).
Now that this rumor has finally been put to rest, what other lies and half-truths about the over the shoulder boulder holder can we clear up? Here are seven other bra myths, busted.

8 Things Happy People Do in the First 5 Minutes of Their Day
One of life’s greatest mysteries is happy people in the morning. Most of us don’t get it. They seem to bounce out of bed with bright smiling faces while we’re still blindly grunting for our morning cups of joe. It’s not fair! How do they do it?
Well, it turns out, those delighted smiles aren’t necessarily preordained. Yes, genetics and life circumstances can account for up to 60 percent of variations in happiness, but the remainder is 100 percent up to you!
Even if your default setting is low, positivity is something we can foster in ourselves through our thoughts and actions. Comedian Groucho Marx (who had arguably the grumpiest name on the planet) once said,
"Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself: I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it."
In honor of Groucho's inspiring declaration, I did some research on what happy people do to get their days off to a cheery start. Each of us can rip a page from their handbook — and become one of the shiny happy people in the process.

7 Health Symptoms Women Should Never Ignore
A lady’s got to take care of herself. You know to exercise, go to the Ob/Gyn each year, and check yourself for funky moles and skin marks that might be pre-cancerous. But there are many other health symptoms that occur relatively commonly amongst women that should be considered red flags. We’ve compiled a list of seven health symptoms that, if you’re experiencing, you don’t want to ignore, as they could potentially be indicative of a greater problem developing.
You and your health are way too precious to take lightly.
Thinning Hair
“Everyone loses hair each day,” explains dermatologist Debra Price. In fact, according to the American Hair Loss Council, people lose 100-125 hairs on average daily (but you’re also naturally replacing them each day, so don’t panic!). And since we tend to notice the hair coming out mostly when we brush our hair, wash it or run our fingers through it, sometimes it’s a little concerning to see all that hair come out at once. But that tends to be normal.
However, if you’re noticing more hair loss than usual, seeing thinning at the scalp or a marked decrease in thickness when you pull your hair up in a pony, something else may be going on.
Dr. Price explains, “when people experience increased hair loss, it can sometimes be a sign of stress, illness, anemia or thyroid disease.”
Extra hair loss is not always a sign of a serious condition. It can be caused by nutrient deficiencies, severe physical or emotional stress and hormonal changes such as pregnancy, menopause or going on or off of birth control medication.
If you’re experiencing extra hair loss you should see your doctor. Dr. Price recommends booking an appointment with your dermatologist, who can do blood work and evaluate if you’re experiencing possible hereditary hair thinning, or if it’s linked to a serious systemic problem that needs to be addressed. He or she can also help prescribe treatments to not only help improve the hair loss, but also get to the root of the problem.
Unwanted Body + Facial Hair
It’s fairly common for women to have a little peach-fuzz situation on their bodies and faces (and it can easily be waxed or treated with a cream if it bothers you).
But if you’ve noticed that you’re starting to experience an increasing amount of hair growth on your body or face, it can be a sign of a more serious health issue. “This is most likely being caused by a condition known as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome,” explains holistic health coach Nicole Jardim.

Ask The Experts: How Do I Get Rid Of Hangnail?
There is pretty much nothing worse than sitting at your desk at 10 AM, looking down at your hands, and finding a hangnail (except maybe if this happens at 9 AM). How in the world are you supposed to let that distracting, and yet all-too-familiar, foe just hang out there all day? If you happen to be in an environment where antibacterial soap, olive oil, cuticle scissors and liquid bandages are readily available, you can skip the next few sentences. If not, summon every ounce of patience and self-restraint you can muster, because we received these strict orders from celebrity fashion manicurist Nia Cooper: DO NOT pull it out or bite it. Yes, we preserved her use of all caps for dramatic effect. Put a bandage on the little devil, so you won’t be tempted to touch it throughout the rest of the day. Once you get home, follow Cooper’s four-step instructions for how to get rid of a hangnail:
Thoroughly wash your hands with antibacterial soap and warm water.
Soak your nail in warm olive oil for 10 minutes to soften the hangnail.
Dip the points of your cuticle scissors in rubbing alcohol. Then cut the hangnail at the base.
After it has been removed, apply a liquid bandage product over the area. They provide an antibiotic and protective seal all in one. Keeping the area covered while it’s healing will prevent infection.
Now that the pesky hangnail is gone, make good use of Cooper’s prevention tips to keep it from coming back:
Do not bite your nails.
Drink lots of water to prevent dry nails.
Exfoliate your hands every other night, paying close attention to the cuticles, to remove dead skin.
Keep your hands and nails moisturized at all times. (Looking for a new hand cream? We love Lancôme Absolute Hand Treatment during the day because it has SPF 15. At night, we’ve been turning to The Body Shop Almond Hand & Nail Butter. Remember: keeping your hands moisturized is also important for keeping them looking young.)

The Way You Should Be Showering ( And Why )
Sure, you’ve mastered the 3-minute shower — you’re in, you’re out, you feel clean – you consider it a success. But your shower routine can and should be more than just an exercise in good hygiene. Strategic showering will put you on the fast track for healthy, shiny hair and clear, glowing skin.
1. Brush Your Hair First
Detangling prior to showering is key because wet hair is weaker and prone to breakage. That means you should avoid the urge to rake through any tangles while conditioning too. Just start brushing the ends and work your way up to the roots while you’re waiting for the water to warm up.
2. Rinse Thoroughly
Before you rush in to lathering up those locks, be sure to give them a good, thorough rinse under warm water. Take at least 10 seconds to loosen dirt and oil and open up the cuticle, prepping hair for what’s next.
3. Lather the Right Way
A proper shampoo job should take about 30-60 seconds. But don’t just plop the product on top of your head and start scrubbing. To distribute the shampoo across the roots evenly, pour a quarter-sized dollop into your hands and gently massage it in using a back and forth motion. You don’t need to shampoo the whole head — never scrub fragile ends, but don’t forget the nape of the neck. The roots there can actually collect the most oil. When your time is up, squeeze the lather down the length of your hair then rinse until the water runs clear of suds.
4. Condition Quickly
Squeeze excess water out of hair and form a loose pony with your hand, smoothing a cherry-sized drop of conditioner through the lower half of your ponytail. This way, the conditioner is concentrated around your ends and not your roots, which can make your hair appear greasy. Your hair only needs a few seconds to soak up the benefits of your conditioner, so unless you’re using your weekly deep conditioning mask, you can rinse it out right away.
5. Cleanse Your Body
If you’re finding breakouts on your back, leftover conditioner may be to blame. So be sure to wash your body after your hair. Steer clear of traditional soaps, which can be irritating and drying to the skin. Choose a non-soap hydrating cleanser, like Kiehl’s Crème de Corps Nurturing Body Washing Cream or The Body Shop Cocoa Butter Creamy Body Wash, and use your hands to hit all the key areas. Loofahs and washcloths can become breeding grounds for bacteria and mold, so when you need exfoliation, do it with one of these full-body exfoliators instead.
6. Shave Smarter
If you’re going to shave, it should be one of the last steps in your routine. On days when you’re also due for some exfoliation, scrub before you shave to help release any ingrown hairs. And remember to always use a sharp razor. Dry it off and store it outside of the shower after every use.
7. Save Your Face for Last
And finally, it’s time to take advantage of the giant steamer that’s been opening up your pores and loosening all that acne-causing sebum. Wait until you’re completely finished shampooing to ensure you’re washing away any and all pore-clogging product runoff. Just turn the water temperature to lukewarm to protect the delicate skin on your face and do your final rinse in cool water to seal the hair cuticle and leave your complexion perfectly refreshed.
Are you a shower pro or did you just now learn the error of your ways? Tell us what you’ve been doing wrong (and right!) in the comments below.

The Most Effective Home Remedy for Cellulite with Castor Oil
Cellulite is a dimpled look of the skin. It is mainly caused by the pressing down of the damaged connective tissues which coat the fat layer of your body by the layer of fat cells beneath the outer walls of your skin. The single remedy the US Food and Drug Administration approved is the application of handheld therapy massage on the skin in order to break the fat layer into several sections which are called Endermologie. This method was introduced from Europe. There are numerous posts over the internet offering remedies for treating cellulite; among the given remedies is the use of castor oil on the surface area of your skin where you have the dimpled like skin otherwise cellulite.
Cellulite and Circulation
More so, there are different theories regarding the causes of cellulite. Micelle Pick, who is the founder of Women To Women Clinic, suggest that insufficient blood flow and lymph fluid in the connective tissues make the fat cells beneath lose their elasticity, get weakened and also tightened. She further revealed that under normal condition, capillaries should provide fresh nutrient-rich blood to the skin and the lymph. therefore, they will take away waste and toxins from the body, but when this blood flow doesn't happen correctly, this will result in the surrounding tissues starved and weaken.
The Lymphatic System
Moreover, for a better understanding of cellulite, it's important to know what lymph system is and how it functions. This lymphatic system is accountable for removing waste and excess fluid from the cells and the tissue in between them. Plus, it helps the circulatory system to carry to the cells and tissues the necessary nutrients, hormones and oxygen. Thus, if the lymph drainage is slow, this will lead to the buildup of fluid and the cells will starve of oxygen and nutrients. One of the holistic practitioners in this field David G. William states that since the buildup of fluid outside the cells causes the tissues to stretch, it'll be more difficult to adjust it when the stretching is allowed to last for a long time.
Castor Oil and Lymph Flow
Nevertheless, it's been observed that castor oil has many health benefits which range from
functioning as a laxative,
pain reliever,
preventing of virus, bacteria, and even yeast growth,
stimulating the lymphatic system.

9 Common Lipstick Mistakes You Might Be Making
Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but lipstick runs a close second. It can easily complete a makeup look, an outfit, and even a mood. But a lot of times, a simple lipstick mistake can also ruin a makeup look, outfit, or mood if the wrong shade is applied or the right shade isn't applied properly. As much as we might want it to be, lipstick is not always that laid-back best friend. It's usually more of the high-maintenance type. And that's okay. We just have to remember and accept it for what it is to have the best relationship possible.
But if you find yourself thinking Um, no. Lipstick should totally be a best friend of the laid-back variety, then you just have to keep in mind which ones indeed are. For example, lighter hues closer to your skin tone are lower maintenance because the outline of your lips won't be as easily discernible, so you won't have to worry about maintaining crisp edges. Also, if a more neutral color starts to wear off, it won't appear as patchy as a darker shade would against the natural color of your lips.
The formula of a lipstick also matters. A sheerer, glossier formula will wear off more quickly than a matte formula, requiring more frequent applications. However, a completely matte formula can be drying, and will require more preparation before application. So while applying lipstick might initially seem like a bit of a no-brainer, there is actually some thought that goes into achieving the perfect lipstick application and maintaining it. Regardless of your color or formula preference, here are nine mistakes you might be making and how to fix them, so you can get the most out of your lipstick.

Makeup Tips from Professional Makeup Artists
Makeup is tricky. I’m always trying to find a better way to get the look I want. Surprisingly, there are some genius–yet very simple–ways to improve your look. Here's How to Make Your Makeup Look Amazing in Pictures
Use a color that’s a little deeper than your skin tone and blend it through your crease for definition.
You can begin by applying it at the outer corner of your eye, sweeping inward along the crease. Then, apply highlighter to the inner corner and brow bone.
The biggest tip: Use your brush to blend so that you can’t see where one shadow begins and the other ends.
Let’s dance, eyeliner.
Eyeliner frames the eyes in photos (and, you know, real life).
“Use a skinny brush so you can apply a thin liner very close to the lashes. If you have a smoother eyelid, try applying the liner while the eye is open and sculpt your perfect shape.
The closer to the lash and tighter the line, the better! Start with the classic shape and experiment with adding to it to incorporate a bit of your personality,” he says.

17 Genius Ways to Make Thin Hair Look Seriously Thick
First off, there are a few things you need to avoid.
1. Pinterest is going to tell you to use coconut oil. Don’t do it if you have thin hair.
“Oil just adds shine, it won’t actually make anything better,” Lily Yip, master stylist at Mizu Salon, tells BuzzFeed Life. “Silicones and oils just become a coating on top of hair, so it’s very difficult to remove. Eventually, it weighs down your hair and you get tons of buildup and it actually makes your hair look thinner.”
2. Steer clear of shampoos with ammonium lauryl sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate.
“People with thin hair need to avoid detergents, polymers, proteins, damaging alcohols, and ammonia that is found in traditional shampoos in the form of ammonium lauryl sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate. These ingredients are added to make the shampoo feel thicker and richer in your hand, and also to create the foaming lather people have come to expect,” Chaz Dean, creator of WEN Hair Care, tells BuzzFeed Life. “The reality is that these same ingredients are incredibly harsh and drying to your hair and scalp.”

What You Should Be Doing Right After Your Shower
There are some routines in our lives that have become so, well, routine that we go through them as if on autopilot: brushing our teeth, washing our face, shaving, etc. Our post-showering rituals would probably fall into this category, as most of us consider getting dry and clothed as the basic priorities after showertime. While we understand this thought process, we feel it is our duty to inform of you of how crucial your post-shower routine is in maintaining the health of your hair and skin. Take a look at the following non-negotiables you should be implementing into your post-shower ritual.
1. Moisturizing
Hot water and steam can do a number on your skin, leaving it super dry after showering. Do your due diligence in keeping it supple and hydrated by moisturizing from head to toe. This is a great time to put that new body butter to good use!
Product Recommendations: Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream-Intense Hydration, The Body Shop Almond Body Butter
2. Patting (Not Rubbing) Your Skin Dry
We totally understand the need to dry off fast and hop into some warm, clean clothes, but that rough towel-drying you’re engaging in isn’t doing much for your skin. Rough rubbing can exacerbate dry, sensitive skin even more. Instead, try a more gentle approach, patting your body with your towel. We promise it won’t take up more time, and your skin will thank you!
3. Throw on Your Serums
After a steamy shower, the pores in your body are open, allowing for better absorption of skincare products and solutions. This is the perfect time to give your mug love by throwing on your skin-saving serums and oils.
Product Recommendations: SkinCeuticals Blemish + Age Defense, L’Oréal Paris Youth Code Dark Spot Correcting & Illuminating Serum Corrector
4. Apply Leave-In Conditioner or Detangler
Are you haphazardly throwing your unbrushed, wet hair into a tangled bun after you hop out of the tub? This could be contributing to those split ends and breakage you’ve been spotting. Take a few minutes and spritz your post-shower hair with a nourishing leave-in conditioner or detangler and comb through it (don’t brush!) with a wide-toothed comb. This step is especially important for those with dry, frizzy locks.

Beauty Beginners The Smart Girl's Guide to Contouring
I hope you’ve all been enjoying my new Beauty Beginners series! So far, I’ve shared my basic tips for applying lipstick and foundation. And today, we’re going to take a deeper dive as I go over my tips for how to contour. If you’ve never tried contouring before, it’s actually a lot easier than you might think. You don’t have to go to the extreme and paint your entire face different shades—you can make it as simple as you’d like. Here’s my beginners guide to contouring…
Make Bronzer Your Best Friend
Like I said above, you don’t need to go out and buy 10 different shades of foundation in order to successfully contour your face. In fact, all you really need is a great bronzer. You can use liquid or powder bronzers, but if you’re really serious about defining your cheekbones, nose and jawline, you might want to look into buying a liquid bronzer. It will also blend in a little easier if your skin type is dry. Apply your foundation as you normally would before beginning to contour (read about my beginners guide to foundation here).
Choose the Right Color
Just as choosing the right foundation is important, choosing the right bronzer color is key for a natural, contoured look. As a rule of thumb, I always opt for a bronzer that’s only about two shades darker than my natural skin tone (I love this one and this one). I find that this looks most natural and actually allows me to layer without looking cakey or orange.
Get the Correct Tools
If you’re going to use a liquid bronzer for contouring, a makeup blending sponge works best. And if you’re going to use a powder bronzer, an angled brush or a flat brush is best for giving your cheekbones that coveted depth. Layering powder bronzer over your liquid bronzer will actually give your skin a finished look—you just might have to practice a few times to get the hang of it!
Ready, Set, Contour…
Once you have the correct bronzer and the correct makeup tools, you’re ready to contour. Start by sweeping your bronzer where the sun hits your face—on your nose, across your forehead, on your cheekbones and around your jawline. Make sure to use light, sweeping strokes so you don’t get too heavy. The darkest application of your bronzer should start from your hairline, sweeping out toward your cheeks. Then, sweep a lighter application across your cheek and back to your ears. My most important tip? Don’t use too much. Bronzer looks best when it’s understated and just gives you a sun-kissed glow.

26 Mind-Blowing Hacks to Get Flawless Eyelashes Every Time
1. Bend the brush of the mascara wand so it's easier to maneuver.
As you pull the wand out of the tube, gently bend the tip so it's perpendicular to the handle. This new shape will make the brush easier to control and get to the harder-to-reach areas, like the tiny hairs toward the inner corner of your eye, when applying multiple coats of mascara to both your upper and lower lash lines.
2. Wipe off excess mascara on a tissue to prevent clumps.
A brand new bottle of mascara can transfer a lot of extra product on the wand for the first few uses, causing clumpy lashes. So before your first coat, glide the brush over a napkin or tissue to remove any excess formula.
3. Keep your lashes curled longer by wiggling the brush back and forth at the base of your lashes, and then swiping to the tips.
If you coat your lashes evenly, it will weigh down the tips of the hairs, causing your lashes to straighten out after a few minutes. The best way to hold a curl is to apply a thicker coat of mascara at the root of your lashes and a lighter one toward the ends. You can achieve this by wiggling the wand back and forth at the base, and then lightly combing through to the tips.

How to Whiten Your Teeth Naturally with Turmeric
The prettiest thing you can wear. I say that, given some of the questionable fashion choices I’ve made since becoming a mom (hello pj’s at 2pm!), that’s never been more true.
Americans spend over a billion dollars a year on over-the-counter tooth whitening products, often without being aware of their risks. Fortunately, we don’t need them – we can simply head to our pantry and most likely find at least one ingredient that whitens naturally. Not only is it a safer option, it’s more affordable, too.
One, which I mention in my ebook, DIY Organic Beauty Recipes, is activated charcoal. (Yes, the stuff that looks like squid ink when you brush it on.)
The other, which I’m going to tell you about today, is turmeric, a gorgeous yellow spice that is often used to give mustard it’s bright color. Though these two substances are notorious for staining just about everything else in sight, they actually remove stains from teeth and lighten overall tooth color. I wrote a little about how activated charcoal works in my ebook, but the mechanism behind turmeric is still a mystery. Here’s what you need to know, though:
IT WORKS.
You may notice an immediate difference with the first application, you may not. But if you’ll do it consistently for a few days to a week, I think you’ll be surprised by how much of a difference it makes. Hey, before you know it you’ll probably be telling your best friend, sister or mom to rub turmeric on their teeth, too!
Will your teeth become so blindingly white that they look like they glow in the dark? No. Many of us are used to seeing ultra-white hollywood smiles, but what’s rarely mentioned is that those smiles are often achieved by applying veneers to the front of natural teeth. It’s just not possible to bleach teeth that white, but it’s not necessary for a gorgeous, healthy looking smile either.
I mean, according to Mother Nature Network, “Former Miss USA Susie Castillo swears by her recipe for homemade toothpaste, which includes turmeric powder. (Though Ms. Castillo seems to have recently changed her website and the link is not longer active, I was able to find it via wayback machine.)
Now, we’ll get to today’s technique in a second, but first let me tell you . . .
Why I Ditched Tooth Whitening Strips
Years ago, I was so addicted to whitening strips that I would often pop one in after eating on my lunch break. I didn’t know that you’re only supposed to use over-the-counter strips twice-per-year at the very most, and that increasing the frequency comes with risks. (source)
I found out soon enough, though. My teeth started to ache and the tips became slightly translucent, which are both documented side effects of conventional tooth whiteners. “The media has done a good job of making whitening sound innocuous, but it’s not,” Dr. Ira Handschuh, a White Plains, N.Y., dentist, told ABC News.
According to the article,”Carbamide peroxide, the whitening agent in most bleaches, can irritate the gums, causing them to recede, making the teeth brittle, chalky and so thin as to be translucent at the edges when the product is overused.”
What was even more upsetting to me, though, was my teeth faded back to yellow more and more quickly after each treatment, so the more often I used them the less effective they were. Ugh.
Of course, those are just a few of the concerns associated with conventional whitening treatments. The long-term effects are not fully known, but one older study suggests there may be a connection between oral cancer in young adults and the use of tooth whitening products. The study was very small and is not definitive by any means, but a subsequent study on dentist-performed whitening treatments (which use the same basic chemicals, only at higher concentrations) also found potential genotoxic effects. So how did I break the habit? Well, just around the time I developed tooth sensitivity I discovered real food, ditched the strips, embraced bone broth, and started making my own deodorant and tooth soap.
