9 Common Lipstick Mistakes You Might Be Making
Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but lipstick runs a close second. It can easily complete a makeup look, an outfit, and even a mood. But a lot of times, a simple lipstick mistake can also ruin a makeup look, outfit, or mood if the wrong shade is applied or the right shade isn't applied properly. As much as we might want it to be, lipstick is not always that laid-back best friend. It's usually more of the high-maintenance type. And that's okay. We just have to remember and accept it for what it is to have the best relationship possible.
But if you find yourself thinking Um, no. Lipstick should totally be a best friend of the laid-back variety, then you just have to keep in mind which ones indeed are. For example, lighter hues closer to your skin tone are lower maintenance because the outline of your lips won't be as easily discernible, so you won't have to worry about maintaining crisp edges. Also, if a more neutral color starts to wear off, it won't appear as patchy as a darker shade would against the natural color of your lips.
The formula of a lipstick also matters. A sheerer, glossier formula will wear off more quickly than a matte formula, requiring more frequent applications. However, a completely matte formula can be drying, and will require more preparation before application. So while applying lipstick might initially seem like a bit of a no-brainer, there is actually some thought that goes into achieving the perfect lipstick application and maintaining it. Regardless of your color or formula preference, here are nine mistakes you might be making and how to fix them, so you can get the most out of your lipstick.

Makeup Tips from Professional Makeup Artists
Makeup is tricky. I’m always trying to find a better way to get the look I want. Surprisingly, there are some genius–yet very simple–ways to improve your look. I’ve gathered together some of these ideas so that you can try them out yourself. You’ll be amazed how easy and fabulous it is to make your makeup look professional.

Here's How to Make Your Makeup Look Amazing in Pictures
Use a color that’s a little deeper than your skin tone and blend it through your crease for definition.
You can begin by applying it at the outer corner of your eye, sweeping inward along the crease. Then, apply highlighter to the inner corner and brow bone.
The biggest tip: Use your brush to blend so that you can’t see where one shadow begins and the other ends.
Let’s dance, eyeliner.
Eyeliner frames the eyes in photos (and, you know, real life).
“Use a skinny brush so you can apply a thin liner very close to the lashes. If you have a smoother eyelid, try applying the liner while the eye is open and sculpt your perfect shape.
The closer to the lash and tighter the line, the better! Start with the classic shape and experiment with adding to it to incorporate a bit of your personality,” he says.

26 Mind-Blowing Hacks to Get Flawless Eyelashes Every Time
1. Bend the brush of the mascara wand so it's easier to maneuver.
As you pull the wand out of the tube, gently bend the tip so it's perpendicular to the handle. This new shape will make the brush easier to control and get to the harder-to-reach areas, like the tiny hairs toward the inner corner of your eye, when applying multiple coats of mascara to both your upper and lower lash lines.
2. Wipe off excess mascara on a tissue to prevent clumps.
A brand new bottle of mascara can transfer a lot of extra product on the wand for the first few uses, causing clumpy lashes. So before your first coat, glide the brush over a napkin or tissue to remove any excess formula.
3. Keep your lashes curled longer by wiggling the brush back and forth at the base of your lashes, and then swiping to the tips.
If you coat your lashes evenly, it will weigh down the tips of the hairs, causing your lashes to straighten out after a few minutes. The best way to hold a curl is to apply a thicker coat of mascara at the root of your lashes and a lighter one toward the ends. You can achieve this by wiggling the wand back and forth at the base, and then lightly combing through to the tips.

How to Know When to Throw Out Your Makeup
Time to come clean. How long have your makeup products crowded your medicine cabinet? Filled your bathroom drawer? Overflowed your makeup bag(s)? Be honest, you’re a bit of a hoarder, aren’t you? Don’t feel bad, we all do it. Nobody wants to part with their makeup stash (or the hard-earned cash that brought it into your life).
Unfortunately, though, your makeup and skincare items are like a ticking clock once you’ve opened them. They only last for so long before being contaminated with bacteria that’s harmful to your skin. And just like you wouldn't eat anything in your kitchen that smelled funny or was discolored, lumpy, or separated, you shouldn't put it on your face.
To get the most out of your products, store everything in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. As inconvenient as it is, that does mean outside of your bathroom, where there's lots of moisture and lots of bacteria is flying around. And know how to tell when it's time to say goodbye.

5 Tricks to Get Thicker, Longer Eyelashes
You might think the easiest way to bat some dynamite lash would be to stick some falsies on your eyelids, but newsflash: They can be damaging when worn long term. Working on strengthening your own lashes is a far better long-term strategy.
Like hair, your eyelashes work on a growing, resting and shedding cycle, “anywhere from six to 11 months, depending on the individual,” says Maryland-based dermatologist Lawrence Green. “The growing phase lasts for a month or two, while the non-growing phases can last from four to nine months.”
If your lashes are prone to being short, thin, and shedding, here’s how to extend your growth cycle and rev them right up:
Watch Your Diet
“Nutritionally deficient diets can adversely affect anything in the body, including eyelash growth,” Green says. Check out our guide to foods to eat for amazing hair, which applies to lashes too.
Take The Proper Care
“The most common cause of eyelash loss is wearing mascara for too long or not taking mascara off properly,” says Green. “Mascara should be removed every night and never left on overnight.” Eyelashes are gentle and easier to pull out than your hair, so going to sleep with makeup-free lashes will ensure they are prime for growth.
Use The Right Type Of Mascara
Green recommends women apply good quality, non-generic mascaras “with conditioners, if possible, and avoid waterproof mascara.” Try a coat of Jane Iredale Lash Extender and Conditioner before applying mascara for thicker, stronger lashes.

5 Makeup Artist Tricks to Steal
As a makeup artist, I am constantly helping clients to look their best and make the most of the products they own. The more you know how to utilize your beauty tools, the more fun you can have (not to mention, the more money you’ll save). Here are some of my favorites simple tips and tricks that anyone can do, that’ll make you feel—and look—like a pro.
1. The Matte Factor: You can turn any lipstick matte by adding a small amount of powder blush on top. Apply lipstick, blot with a tissue, and pat blush on top with your finger until it's fully matte. This is a perfect way to test matte texture to see if you like it while utilizing products you already have.
2. Ms. Mix-A-Lot: You can easily make an at home tinted moisturizer by mixing your foundation with your daily moisturizing cream. This will thin out the texture of your makeup when you want sheer coverage, and hydrate your skin at the same time. If you’re searching for a new foundation, Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation is incredible.
3. Double Duty Eyes: Did you know mascara can double as an eyeliner? Smudge some mascara from your wand on your hand, and apply as a liner with a brush to the lash line. Finish with 3 coats of the same mascara on the lashes. This is a great tip for traveling.
4. Instant Brow Lift: Highlight brows with concealer and blend with a foundation brush. By placing concealer around the brows and blending, you add shape and lift, without an eye-raising bill from the plastic surgeon.
5. Cheeky Fix: Lipstick can double as a cream blush when you're in a bind. I was on set one time and left my blushes in a different makeup bag that wasn't with me. I used a soft peach lipstick blended on the cheek instead, and voila: instant cream blush! A current favorite color of mine, Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick in Pink Celebration, is also a good option for makeshift blush.

8 Signs You're In a Beauty Rut ( and how to fix them! )
We’ve all been there – one day you wake up and you can’t remember the last time you switched up your mascara/blush/lipstick combo or deviated from your standard straight-as-a-pin ‘do. You, our friend, have fallen into a beauty rut. Luckily, this disorder can be treated swiftly and the remedies are painless (consider yourself lucky). Read on for our tips and get ready to snap out of your beauty rut, stat.
1. Putting on makeup is starting to feel like a chore.
Solution: When was the last time you got that familiar little thrill from opening your eyeshadow palette or applying a fresh layer of lipstick? If you can’t remember, maybe it’s time to switch things up. Take a trip to the makeup counter or lose yourself in beauty boards on Pinterest for inspiration.
2. Your friends refer to your signature beauty look as “the messy morning-after.
Solution: Major stress from life and work have prevented you from spending any time updating your beauty routine. Instead of resorting to your go-to undone bun and swipe of mascara yet again, try these tips to save time in your morning routine and still look polished.
3. You’ve resorted to using a lip brush to scrape up every last remnant of your favorite lip color.
Solution: We get it – your signature lip color has been with you through some tough times. That doesn’t mean it should be the only lipstick you have on rotation. Maybe it’s time to give it a rest and try a pretty Radiant Orchid stain or even a super-flattering nude. One swipe and you’ll feel like a new person.
4. Your makeup routine is so predictable, you could do it while you’re asleep – and sometimes you do.
Solution: It’s halfway through the work day and you realize that you barely remember putting on your makeup this morning because it’s become such a part of your routine. Give new life to your beauty process by waking up 5 minutes earlier and trying a new look at least once this week. Whether it’s an upgrade to your basic braid or a new way to wear colored eyeliner, a little beauty shakeup never hurt anyone.
5. You’ve actually used up an entire bottle of polish...and am considering buying another one in the same color.
Solution: We’re going to put a stop to this right now – your nails deserve better. Sure, finding a polish you love is never a bad thing, but by no means does that mean you should ignore all of the other gorgeous colors, textures and sparkles out there just begging to grace your digits.
6. You’re still using the same skincare routine as you were in high school.
Solution: You’ve changed since high school (thank goodness), so what makes you think your skin hasn’t? Newsflash: it has. Read our guide on the right skincare routine for each decade of your life and update your skin products, stat.
7. You get offered a free makeover and feel anxiety.
Solution: One word of advice – if you’re offered a free makeover, take it. Sure, you might reach for your makeup-removing wipes right afterwards, but you might also discover a whole new way to wear your eyeshadow, or a peachy blush that sculpts model-status cheekbones out of thin air.
8. You haven’t attempted a hairstyle other than a ponytail for as long as you can remember.
Solution: We get it – we love the ease of looping your hair through an elastic just as much as you do. But beware of falling into the ponytail rut – not only can it lead to hair breakage, but there’s a world of braids, buns and 'dos out there that will take your locks to the next level.

6 Makeup Tricks to Make You Look More Awake
We all have those mornings where no matter how much sleep we got or how many cups of coffee we had, we still look like we literally just woke up... and could fall asleep at any moment. Enter your saving grace: Makeup. I'm not saying that painting your mug from chin to forehead is going to automatically breathe life back in to your face, but what I am saying is that with the help of a few of your favorite products, you can trick yourself into looking more awake than you actually feel inside. Here's how.
USE COLD WATER
The thought of splashing your face with cold water first thing in the morning sounds like maybe the last thing you want to do. But, trust us — it totally wakes up your face. The cold water will help shrink your pores so that the puffiness goes away. Take things a step further and plan ahead by freezing some cucumber slices. In the morning, pop them on your eyes for about ten minutes to quickly de-puff your eyes.
CONCEAL UNDER YOUR EYES
The biggest indicator of a tired face is dark circles under your eyes. Using foundation first, even out your skin. Then, dab a little bit of concealer and blend until it looks smooth.

20 Genius Concealer Hacks Every Women Needs to Know
1. If you use foundation, apply it first, and then apply your concealer.
If you apply your foundation first, you'll find that you don't need to use as much concealer. If you apply concealer first, however, you'll remove most of it while applying your foundation.
2. The most flattering way to apply concealer is to draw a triangle with the base under your eye and the point toward your cheek.
This shape not only conceals dark circles, but it also instantly creates the illusion that your face is lifted. Think of it as holding a flashlight against your cheek, shining the light right underneath your eye, and drawing the focus upward.

How to Find the Best Lip Color for Your Skin Tone
Most of us have a bunch of lipsticks in our beauty bag, some that we wear all the time, some that never get touched. There's a reason for that. You may have fallen in love with a lipstick in the store or on Beyonce’s face, but when you put it on yourself? It just doesn't work.
That's likely because the lipstick color clashes with your skin tone. We spoke to celebrity makeup artist Kindra Mann, whose clientele includes Vanessa Hudgens and Rosario Dawson, to suss out tricks for finding a lipstick that works with your complexion.
1. Identify Your Undertone
First, the basics. Everyone’s skin has undertones of either yellow or pink. Yellow is warmer, pink is cooler. Knowing your undertone is enormously helpful when you're trying to figure out which lipsticks look best on you.
A quick way to identify your skin's undertone is to look at the veins on your wrist. If they are blue, and you also tend to gravitate towards wearing blues, whites, and grays, you’ve got pink undertones. If your veins appear more green, you have a warmer yellow undertone. If they appear to be both blue and green, you are the lucky owner of a neutral skin tone (meaning equal pink and yellow tones), and you can wear any color.
Still unsure? Hold a piece of gold jewelry and a piece of silver jewelry up to your face. Ignoring your personal preference, assess which looks better with your skin — cooler (pink) tones go better with silver jewelry, whereas warm (yellow) skin tones work better with gold.

7 Ways to Look More Awake Without Makeup
This, coming from the Queen of Looking Like A Cream Puff in the morning. Or, you know, like I'm in some sort of anaphylactic shock. Not sure about you guys, but there's only so much mascara can do when one's eyes are swollen shut. And while I may appreciate the certain plumpness of my sleepy lips, it'd be cool if I could, you know, smile with them. I do have pictures to prove this insanity, but LOL if you think I’m going to post any of them.
Waking up is hard, guys. It just is. And getting out of bed when you look like you could be the understudy to some bad, late-night insomnia thriller doesn't make the process any easier. So here I go, after years of experimentation, bestowing some of my well-earned, sometimes scientifically-proven knowledge on how to look awake before attempting to apply makeup.
Note: These are in a sort-of "Order of Importance." If you count numbers 1 and 6 of equal high importance and work your way toward the middle, numbers 3 and 4 as the center of high importance as you work your way out, and numbers 2 and 5 as the highly-important centers between the otherwise-highest points of importance, you should be good.

DIY: Eye Makeup Remover
You wanna have a second helping of ice cream? I’ll totally support you in that.
Have a secret love for trash TV? Dude, I love Miama Housewives too!
6 days of unwashed hair? I’m happily handing you another shot of dry shampoo as we speak.
Want to call in sick today? Hells yeah, you do.
Some people were put on this earth to volunteer for the homeowners association, to hand out tickets and to otherwise keep us on our best behavior…
but others have been put here for the exact opposite reason. To convince those with an overactive conscience that they should take a break.
And 99% of the time, that’s me….
except when it comes to Sleeping in your makeup.
I’m not going to make you feel good about that.
I’m sorry.
It’s an awkward position for me too.
And I’m not just talking about washing your face either, I’m talking about removing your eye makeup as well.
Your eyes and lashes will thank you if you give them some time to breath each night. Your makeup will look much better applied to a fresh face than it will applied to one with yesterdays remnants.
Of all the eye makeup removers in all the world, I have a favorite. It’s cheap, easy and natural:
